Most people think borders restrict creativity, but in many cases, borders provide freedom and deeper levels of creativity.
This concept sounds counter-intuitive off the top until you take a closer look.
Try this experiment with me…
“Take a pen. Draw something!”
If you are like most people, the next logical question is – WHAT? “What should I draw?”
This experiment proves a point I am going to make i.e. Creativity needs Borders.
1.) I recently hired a designer to redesign a home page for me. The guy was very enthusiastic. His answer was: “Sure, I can do that for you. Can you send me some samples of what you want it to look like?”
I was hesitant to do so, thinking: “We’ll I want him to have total freedom and come up with ideas himself. Why then is he asking me to provide samples so he can do his work? He’s the creative one here! “
2.) See, my thinking was fundamentally flawed, and the effort proved futile.
Without ideas, without recommendations, without samples, without guidelines or without boundaries to work within, creativity is extremely difficult.
In my case, I finally sent the designer some samples of what I wanted – I told him the themes I preferred, the colours patterns I liked and so on.
Only after that was he able to unleash the full wrath of his creativity. He went on to deliver the product exactly how I wanted.
But it took me setting guidelines and providing boundaries for that to happen.
3.) Yes, I know a few people reading this will complain and say something along the line of “But Fru, this is stupid! Boundaries are restrictive to creative work. Debate over! Case closed!”
If that is you, then you are certainly not being “Creative” with your thinking.
It’s true to a certain extent that excessive boundaries can be limiting. I with agree that! But equally true is the fact that “NO BOUNDARIES” greatly limits creativity. It’s a fine balance, and I’ve learned this the hard way.
Stay Flexible! Stay Creative!
The new design we are working on would be coming out on Threelly sometime soon. Watch out for it. I think it will be good. (nope, scratch that!) It would be A+MAZING!
